We’ve been talking about yield management for movie theatres for years. Everyone has said it would never happen. Holy sh*t, the NYT has a piece today with a prediction from AMC: There is no easy fix for industry. But it’s clear that it can’t afford to leave easy money sitting on the table any longer, [...]

Images and Agendas

How good are you at analysing and critiquing images? If you haven’t yet, give a look at Michael Shaw’s BAGnewsNotes where the stated mission is: 1.) To analyze “high profile” news, advertising and advocacy images for the way they reveal political or cultural stereotypes. From a more partisan point of view, the intent is to [...]
The Week In Review

Good read in the in the NYT today, the Baudrillard Q&A. At 76, you are still pushing your famous theory about “simulation” and the “simulacrum,” which maintains that media images have become more convincing and real than reality. All of our values are simulated. What is freedom? We have a choice between buying one car [...]
Robert Smithson’s Floating Island
Posted in ARCHITECTURE & ART, PEEPS, REPORTAGE on September 26, 2005 | Comments Off
Along with other curious New Yorkers I hiked over to the river to see Robert Smithson’s Floating Island this past weekend. The tug captain made a good show, pulling in close to shore and rotating the barge holding the tons of soil, ten or so trees and a few large rocks for full viewing. After [...]

I got hooked via Red vs Blue. No, not red states and blue states, the machinima production by Rooster Teeth Productions. That was a while ago, and I’m still hooked. More recently I came across a nicely executed vid by a talented fellow who calls himself TheGhost, I post it here today as the video [...]

But at minimum the DNA of blogging has to do with distributing the conversation. Contrary to that, the DNA [...]
Bill Viola’s The Passions
Posted in ARCHITECTURE & ART, PEEPS, REPORTAGE on July 28, 2005 | Comments Off
On an antipodean note, The Age posted a chat with video artist Bill Viola re his current show, The Passions. The slowness of Viola’s work also has a political dimension. It is an antidote to what he sees as one of the greatest dangers of our age – the speed with which we receive information [...]
Salon Article Sums Up CurrentTV

Farhad Manjoo asks good questions re CurrentTV in a Salon Article. It’s worth a read, the bottom line is why do we need television for this type of reportage when we have the web? Methinks the broadcast model is trying to be something it isn’t in this case which will leave the good vloggers solidly [...]
Vlog Wild
Posted in PARTICIPATORY MEDIA, REPORTAGE on July 6, 2005 | Comments Off
AlterNet reported today on the increasing popularity and social benefits of vlogging: Last fall, approximately 2.5 million Americans watched Jon Stewart call Tucker Carlson a “dick”; not because CNN’s Crossfire had such a large viewing audience (only a half million tuned into the show itself), but because they could access Stewart’s uproarious appearance on a [...]

Every wonder where the MGM lion came from? The Times Online (UK) posts a piece describing the history of and stories behind the logos of film companies.
via: GreenCine The flash intro really gives the Cahiers du cinéma a nice retro feel BUT it really could go. And a link for English translations would be nice. That said, I’ve been browsing the site a bit now and keep coming back.
