One of the great product discoveries I’ve stumbled over in the past few years is Etymotic ER-4P earphones. These guys have by far, IMHO, created the best iPod listening experience. In fact, listening to my iPod, and previous iPods and portable CD players, sucks in comparison when using other headphones – these are the dog’s bollocks of cans, as it were.

These pups not only reproduce with realistic clarity, they exclude ~35db of local noise. For those of you who don’t immediately grasp the 35db quantity, it’s huge. It’s the music at the gym coming from the ceiling speakers that you don’t want to hear. Or it’s the person on the mobile nearby while you’re trying to concentrate. And it’s the engines on the plane droning away while you are trying to relax from the harrowing TSA experience you have just again encountered as in your past 10 flights in the past as many days of travel (don’t even think of getting me started on this TSA search stuff, I’ve been given the ‘random’ orange card on every commercial flight I’ve been on in the past few weeks, explained by the officials as my propensity to book only a day or two in advance – go figure). Just don’t wear them walking in the street, it’s too easy to get run over by a taxi or bike messenger.
If you think you’re enjoying your music today and using standard issue earbuds, go do yourself a favour and order a pair of these ER-4p Etymotic earphones. They’re life changing.
